J.L. Carr, A Month in the Country. London: The Folio Society, 1998. Second printing thus, 2010. Introduced by Ronald Blythe, illustrated by Ian Stephens. 268 × 167 × 15 mm. Pp. [i–ii], [1–6] 7–121 [122–126]: [8] leaves of ‘plates’ (facing pp. [3], 19, 41, 60, 82, 92, 114 and 116). Type: Caslon. Typeset by Gloucester Typesetting, Printed by Martins of Berwick and bound by Hunter and Foulis in quarter dark brown buckram, cream paper boards with a design in dark brown by Stephens; brown endleaves. Brown slip case.

The description in the prospectus of the format as ‘Double Post 9mo’ is inexplicable (and perhaps a joke); no such format could exist, and the size and shape of the book is closer to a royal octavo. Ian Stephens’s wood-engravings are all full-page, with a detail of one being enlarged for the cover-paper.

A fine copy with pages clean, bright and tightly bound. In like slipcase.

Set in a quiet Yorkshire village just after the First World War, the novel follows a war veteran restoring a medieval mural in a country church, and slowly rediscovering peace, beauty, and connection. First published in 1980, A Month in the Country was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
