Peter’s adventures first appeared in an illustrated letter Potter wrote in 1893 to amuse Noel Moore, the son of the author’s last governess. The five miniature illus trated notes, that fold out to the above dimensions, are addressed to Flopsy, Cotton-tail, Peter and Miss Rabbit, plus Tom Kitten. They are loosely inserted into a blue card with flaps to secure them. Accompanied by an edition statement, printed letterpress by Hand and Eye, which states in part ‘limited to one thousand hand-numbered copies and twenty lettered copies hors de commerce’, and a colour print of Peter. All are loosely inserted in a dark blue paper wallet decorated in silver for which there is a pocket pasted in the box’s lining.
