Leo Tolstoy, The Raid: Two Hussars, Three Deaths: Polikushka, The Death of Ivan Ilyitch: Two Old Men. London: The Folio Society, [1947]. With illustrations by Elizabeth Macfadyen.

‘The raid’ and ‘Two old men’ translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude, the other stories by Constance Garnett. 253 × 160 × 25 mm. Pp. [1–9] 10–280. Type: Perpetua. Printed and bound by Brepols. Quarter black cloth, red cloth boards. White dust-jacket printed in red and black. The illustrations consist of nine pen-and-ink sketches, reproduced from line-blocks. The title-page is a little adventurous in design for a first book, with the main title ‘Tales’ appearing at the foot of the page, beneath the imprint. This book was printed and bound in Belgium because of paper rationing and the difficulties of finding printers willing to take on new work in post-war Britain; Charles Ede notes in Folio 21 that the work was printed by Brepols ‘as a favour’ and that the standard of printing ‘leaves a good deal to be desired’. The illustrations are the first (and apparently penultimate) published work of the artist.

Very good book with a crease down the spine, bumping to corners and spine tips, and some foxing to edges and prelims. In like dust wrapper that is worn to extremities and joints, a little darkened to spine, and showing a small portion of loss to upper front panel; now placed in an archival sleeve.
