The Perennial Philosophy
London: Chatto and Windus, [1946]
Illustrated by
The Perennial Philosophy by Aldous Huxley. London: Chatto and Windus, [1946]. First British edition, first impression of this classic work by Huxley. Octavo, original cloth. Pp. viii, 358. Very good in a good, unclipped dust jacket.
"The Perennial Philosophy," Aldous Huxley writes, "may be found among the traditional lore of peoples in every region of the world, and in its fully developed forms it has a place in every one of the higher religions."
With great wit and stunning intellect—drawing on a diverse array of faiths, including Zen Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Christian mysticism, and Islam—Huxley examines the spiritual beliefs of various religious traditions and explains how they are united by a common human yearning to experience the divine. The Perennial Philosophy includes selections from Meister Eckhart, Rumi, and Lao Tzu, as well as the Bhagavad Gita, Tibetan Book of the Dead, Diamond Sutra, and Upanishads, among many others.
Condition
Publisher's original cloth binding with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Externally in very good condition, however with some light edgewear. Corners and spine tips are slightly bumped. Pages are tightly bound and there is some foxing to edges and prelims. No inscriptions. Presenting well in a good, unclipped dust wrapper with moderately foxed panels and light sunning to spine. Some chipping to head and base of the dust jacket, and some small loss present, mostly to the upper portion of the spine and front panel. The dust wrapper has now been placed in a removable, protective sleeve of archival quality.
