Publisher's green cloth, wonderfully decorated and lettered in gilt to front cover and spine, original decorated endpapers. With 25 coloured plates (including frontispiece) tipped within gilt and black frames (as called for), each with a captioned tissue guard, head- and tailpieces throughout the text, all by Nielsen.

Recently restored by Rosy Gray, owner of the Black Cat Bindery in Somerset, resewn with new yellow and blue headbands, rebacked with the original spine superimposed onto blue cloth, and gilt slightly retouched in places. There is some very mild toning and a few occasional grubby fingerprints, along with a handful of tiny, barely noticeable professional repairs to the extremities of a few pages. A few corners have been previously turned, there is a mild crease to one tissue guard, and a very small chip to the lower edge of the frontispiece. Overall, a truly excellent copy, very sympathetically restored.

Now housed for protection in a bespoke solander case hand-made by Rosy, bound in half blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorative borders to spine, gorgeous hand-marbled paper sides, oatmeal cloth to edges, and lined in soft blue suedel.

A beautiful first trade edition of this anthology of Nordic fairy tales brought to life by the inimitable Kay Nielsen. Widely regarded as Nielsen’s finest achievement, Richard Dalby wrote that “Nielsen’s unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations.” Unlike many contemporaries such as Rackham, who typically worked with a three-colour process, Nielsen’s luminous images were reproduced using a four-colour process, giving them extra depth and richness.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0830/5403/5283/files/East-of-the-Sun-and-West-of-the-Moon-FIRST-KAY-NIELSEN-TRADE-EDITION-Illustrated_8.webp?v=1773174583
https://sanchosrarebooks.co.uk/products/east-of-the-sun-and-west-of-the-moon-old-tales-from-the-north-illustrated-first-kay-nielsen-trade-edition-1914
