London: The Folio Society, 1948. First printing thus. Illustrations by Mervyn Peake, introduction by John Hampden. 221 × 142 × 15 mm. Pp. [1–8] 9–148. Type: Imprint. Printed in black and yellow by Mackay. Bound by Mackay in black and cream cloths, divided vertically down the centre of each board, with a figure of Hyde by Peake in gold covering the joint. White dust-jacket printed in yellow and black. The 12 full-page illustrations were printed from relief blocks, in black and yellow. The yellow was also used for capitals and display, although Charles Ede thought it ‘too weak’ for this purpose. Most of the illustrations appear facing chapter openings, with the chapter title printed in yellow on the recto.
A little discoloured to extremities, bumping to corners and spine tips, foxing to edges and prelims, with some offsetting to the latter, and gift inscription in pen to FFEP. Else a very nice copy. In a good dust wrapper that shows wear, tearing, chipping and some loss, notably to head of spine and rear panel; now placed in an archival wrapper.
