From Folio Society limited editions that are bound by skilled artisans like Smith Settle or Ludlow Bookbinders, and contemporary bindings of true first editions bound by the greats, to high-quality, limited and signed editions of contemporary, classic, and occasionally obscure writers from around the world, we are certain there will be a book here for you. ...

What do we mean by fine bindings?

True beauty, rarity and durability; this is what a skilled artisan and experienced bookbinder can add to an ordinary volume, and this is really what we mean today by fine binding. In other words, a book that stands out from others and showcases unique, one-of-a-kind features, and one that is built to withstand many reading sessions. The concept of bound books, however, is not something new at all; it actually dates back to the 1st Century ancient manuscripts known as codices created by the Romans who were inspired by the library rivalry between Pergamom and Alexandria some centuries before. Early Christians then adopted this format for their own works and writings, and with the spread of Christianity across Europe, this popularised bound books even further. Not limited to Western traditions only, fine bindings can be found in many other cultures and time periods; such is the case for Japanese bookbinding that can be traced back to the 8th Century A.D., when the accordion- or folding-style books (known as Japanese orihon) led to the later development of hand-sewn books (known as Japanese retchoso). There are many books that trace back the fascinating history of bookbinding and the various style of bookbinding, but two we would wholeheartedly recommend are Philippa Marks’ The British Library Guide to Bookbinding: History and Techniques and Henry Petroski’s The Book on the Bookshelf; this latter one explores the evolution of bookbinding from parchment scrolls all the way to today.

Regardless of whether you are on the lookout for a beautifully-bound first edition of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Limited Editions Club signed and illustrated edition of The Idiot, Ian Fleming’s Folio Society Limited Edition of Casino Royale, or a highly limited edition from a small, independent press like Ash Tree Press or Swan River Press, we hope you will find something to grace your shelves or that constitutes the perfect gift.

The Histories, by Herodotus. London: The Folio Society, 2020. Between 1832 - when he was just 20 - and 1838, Lear created 80 bird portraits for the naturalist and entrepreneur John Gould. For many, they are the world's finest ornithological illustrations. The portraits were produced using the fledgling art of litography and coloured by hand. They featured in Gould's celebrated books, intermingled with the work of other, often less accomplished artists. David Attenborough first saw one of Lear's plates in the 1950s, and was so struck by its precision and grace that he determined to collect them all. When the collection was complete, he had them bound in an original 19th-century leather binding case."

In 2012, to celebrate the bicentenary of Lear's birth, Attenborough has kindly allowed The Folio Society to reproduce the entire volume in facsimile. Don Quixote was the last of ten Nonesuch editions to benefit of the rather expensive (particularly at a time of economic depression in the 1930s) stencil process, and it was Kauffer's third and last Nonesuch book, widely considered to be his most impressive achievement as an illustrator. Founder of the Nonesuch Press Francis Meynell regarded the frontispiece to the first volume as the finest in any modern book he knew. Interestingly, when Kauffer drew his illustrations, he had never visited Spain, but after returning from a journey there lasting several weeks, he told Meynell that much to his own surprise, he had found his Don Quixote had 'the character of the country and the people'.

A truly luxurious production with no expenses spared for the Nonesuch Press, the paper used was a standout feature. However, it appears that the response was disappointing, and only 75 copies were actually bound up and issued in this form. And from there, things spiral out of control. Peopled with richly drawn Dickensian grotesques and filled with bizarre and comical incident, Munky is as compelling as it is antic. Catling transports the reader to an interwar England in the throes of change. Part bizarre ghost story, part whimsical farce, part idiosyncratic literary experiment, it could be described as P. G. Wodehouse collaborating with Raymond Roussel, with a dash of M. R. James, if it weren’t so uniquely its own thing. B. Catling's Munky was described by The Scotsman as “M. R. A Journal of the Plague Year, being observations or memorials of the most remarkable occurrences, as well public as private, which happened in London during the last great visitation of 1665. London: The Folio Society, 1960.

Very scarce, limited, leather-bound edition, signed by illustrator Peter Pendrey, numbered 21 out of 49. One of the five ultra-rare experimental limited editions that were produced by The Folio Society in 1960 at the request of its members, all featuring full morocco leather bindings, signatures by the illustrators, and numbering on an inserted colophon leaf. Having not proven as popular as the Society initially thought, the actual number of copies bound ranged from only 25 to 75 copies only (as opposed to the original intent to do a limitation run of 250). In order of scarcity, A Journal of the Plague Year is part of only 49 copies made (according to official Folio Society Bibliography) and the fourth rarest after Hermsprong or Man As He Is Not, Robert Bage (25 copies); Memoirs, Louis-Philippe, Comte de Ségur (41 copies); and Vie de Boheme, Henry Mürger (46 copies). The least rare is Lucius Apuleius' The Transformation of Lucius (75 copies), a copy of which (#64) we have in stock as well.

With woodcuts by Peter Pendrey. Introduction by Kenneth Hopkins. 227 × 149 × 24 mm. Pp. [1–4] 5–248. Type: Plantin. Printed and bound by Richard Clay in full black leather with blind embossing of pillars with skulls to covers and spine, and title in gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated endpapers with a stylised view of London and the Thames. No slipcase, as issued (unlike the standard, non-limited edition). Throughout, there are 14 full-page woodcut illustrations in the text, including the frontispiece. A separate colophon leaf, stating that 250 copies were specially bound and signed by Pendrey, is inserted at the end; the 250 is lightly struck off and 49 written above, which is the real limitation of this particular edition.

Condition

A very good copy, with clean pages, a tight binding, and no previous ownership inscriptions.
